Downtown Tampa's Holiday Lights Come On In Stages, And Each Switch Has A Different Owner

Water Street lights up first, on Thursday, November 12. The Riverwalk trees follow on November 29, and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park lights seven trees on December 5. Between those dates, Armature Works lights its own tree just north of downtown and Sparkman Wharf holds its own snowfall night. A different host runs each one on its own calendar, and the first downtown lighting and the last are 23 days apart.

If you live downtown, in the Channel District or on Harbour Island, the season is less one event than a route. Learn the route and you can walk to every lighting without driving.

Water Street Goes First, And Brings New Neighbors

The 5th Annual Season Spectacular runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, around 971 Water St. It's free, and it's the official lighting of the neighborhood, with Water Street promising 500,000 lights across its blocks. The program has a Mrs. Claus Cookie Workshop, a kids' crafts table, Santa photos, a Holiday Serenade sing-along, a North Pole Post Office for wish lists, and Candy Cane Lane with dancers and candy makers. Part of the bar sales goes to the Children's Dream Fund, a Tampa Bay nonprofit.

The storefronts around that lighting have changed since last December. Pura Vida Miami opened its first Tampa Bay café at 1038 Water St. on September 10, serving coffee, matcha, smoothies and café food, Creative Loafing Tampa reported. In late October, the Business Observer reported three more arrivals on the way:

  • Ayu Bottega, a beauty, wellness and lifestyle shop from Alexandra Exterkamp of Ayu Skin in SoHo, set to open in November next door to Pura Vida, with Italian-inspired facial treatments.
  • Sirena City Haus Boutique, Sydney Boright's women's clothing, denim and swimwear shop, aiming for late December or early January. Her original Sirena Boutique on Cypress Street stays open.
  • [solidcore], a 2,675-square-foot reformer studio at 912 E. Cumberland Ave., with a soft opening scheduled for November 12 and a grand opening on December 19. It's the brand's second Tampa studio after Hyde Park.

Water Street hosts again on Thursday, December 3, from 5 to 9 p.m. The free Holiday Promenade brings a market of more than 40 local makers, live music, falling-snow effects and seasonal food and drink to 971 Water St. That's the developer bookending the season's busiest stretch with two Thursday nights of its own.

Curtis Hixon Runs The Longest Season

Water Street lights up in a single evening. Winter Village, presented by the Tampa Bay Lightning, runs for a little over six weeks. It opens at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, 600 N. Ashley Drive, on November 20 and closes January 3, 2027. Entry is free. Skating costs $17, or $15 for kids under 12, and covers 75 minutes on the ice plus skate rental. All skating is booked in advance by timed ticket, and ticket sales opened November 6. If you walk up, you get a QR code and the next open time slot.

Silent disco is the biggest change from last year. WFLA's 2025 guide listed it on Fridays. The 2026 schedule runs it every day the village is open, with headphones handed out first-come, first-served at the information kiosk if you show a valid ID. The Tampa Downtown Partnership owns the headphones and wants them back. The rest of the week has its own rhythm:

Night What runs Hours
Daily Silent disco Village operating hours
Thursdays College night, $2 off skating rentals 5–9 p.m.
Saturdays Festive Saturdays performances 7–8 p.m.
Select Sundays Character visits, including Frosty, Elsa, Olaf and the Grinch 1–4 p.m.
Nov. 28–29 Shop Small Weekend, young entrepreneurs 1–4 p.m.

There are two extras that leave the park. The Winter Village Express is a 50-minute round trip on the TECO Line Streetcar from Whiting Station to Ybor and back, with a sing-along and trivia. The River of Lights cruise boards the Pirate Water Taxi at Stop #12 next to the village and heads down the Hillsborough River to see the waterfront decorations. Leashed dogs are welcome in the village areas, on the Riverwalk and at the dog park next door, but not on the ice.

Curtis Hixon holds the last of the downtown lightings. Tampa's Santa Fest and Tree Lighting fills Saturday, December 5. The parade steps off at 1 p.m. from Morgan and Madison streets, heads west on Madison, turns north onto Ashley Drive and ends at Ashley and Cass. Madison Street has the best views. The park has crafts, games and free Santa photos from 1 to 5 p.m. Seven Christmas trees light at 6 p.m., and a free holiday movie plays on the lawn afterward.

The Riverwalk Ties It All Together

Friends of the Riverwalk hosts the lighting in between. The 6th Annual Riverwalk Tree Lighting runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, at the Tampa Convention Center and The Sail Plaza. Mayor Jane Castor arrives in the Convention Center basin aboard a Pirate Water Taxi to light the Riverwalk Holiday Trees. The rain date is December 4. The Riverwalk's Holiday Spectacular of lights and displays starts two days earlier, on November 27, and closes January 3, the same day as Winter Village.

That shared end date matters for anyone who lives here. From Thanksgiving weekend to January 3, the Riverwalk is lit end to end, and it's the walking path between every other stop on this list. Winter Village's own guide suggests parking once, at a garage such as the William F. Poe Garage north of Curtis Hixon, and walking the Riverwalk to everything else. If you live in the Channel District or on Harbour Island, you don't need the garage. You're already on the route.

Just north of downtown, The Heights District holds its Ninth Annual Holiday Tree Lighting at Armature Works on Saturday, November 21. A local-vendor market runs from 5 to 9 p.m., and the tree on the front lawn lights at 8 p.m. It's a riverside walk from Curtis Hixon, and it falls on Winter Village's second night.

Channelside Gets Its Own Night

Sparkman Wharf has two holiday pieces. Spark Square, a pop-up retail space at 615 Channelside Drive, runs all of November. Tampa candle and home-fragrance maker Taking You There Candle Co. is its named vendor. Then on Friday, December 4, from 5 to 9 p.m., Winter Wonder Wharf brings snowfall, holiday music and décor, Santa photos, crafts and Nutcracker-inspired performances to the same address.

Look at the calendar around that date. Water Street's falling snow is on Thursday, December 3. The Wharf's snowfall is Friday, December 4, which is also the Riverwalk's rain date. Santa Fest is Saturday, December 5. That makes three hosts on three straight nights within walking distance of each other, and the busiest weekend of the downtown season.

December 19 Is The Night Everything Overlaps

The season's last big Saturday piles up even more. Tampa's largest lighted boat parade starts on the Hillsborough River at 6:15 p.m. on December 19. Longtime Tampa personality Charley Belcher is this year's grand marshal, and the Friends of the Riverwalk parade page is posting registration and VIP details as they're released. That same day, onbikes holds its 15th annual Winter Wonder Ride from a village at Thunder Alley, with a route along Bayshore Boulevard. Every ticket helps the group give new bicycles to local children. December 19 is also the date [solidcore] set for its grand opening on Cumberland Avenue.

Here's the full season in order:

  1. Nov. 12: Season Spectacular, Water Street, 5–9 p.m.
  2. Nov. 20: Winter Village opens, Curtis Hixon
  3. Nov. 21: Armature Works tree lighting, 8 p.m.

Downtown's holiday weekends bring more foot traffic than usual to Water Street, the Riverwalk and Channelside. If you're thinking about listing a downtown condo this winter, The Warneke Group can show you how the season's calendar fits your timing, and give you a current value for your home before the lights come down on January 3.
